Micro-Needling with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy?

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Skin Rejuvenation therapy is a cutting-edge, anti-aging procedure. The treatment uses a patient’s own blood and thus poses no risk of allergy. The PRP treatment has the effect of amplifying your innate natural healing power and tissue reorganization potential. This technique uses the body’s platelets (found in plasma, a component of our blood) to potentiate the body’s healing process. Platelets play a role in stopping bleeding and repairing damaged blood vessels and cells. Platelets contain substances called growth factors that repair the body. These growth factors, when released, induce the production of collagen and new capillaries to repair the skin.  At least 8 essential growth factors are found in platelets.  With PRP we concentrate them and introduce them to needed areas to help rejuvenate and form new skin, which will be fresher in appearance.

Who can benefit from PRP Therapy?

PRP Therapy has been used for many years to help stimulate collagen formation in antiaging treatments. It is the single best treatment to lessen deep acne scarring and stimulate growth of new tissue below the skin.  PRP treatments help improve the appearance of stretch marks of the abdomen and bumps of the upper arms. PRP treatments are commonly used to help the body heal from athletic injuries. Recent scientific data has shown that PRP Therapy can also be an aid in the treatment of hair loss—it works equally well in men and women and treats all types of hair loss, including scarring alopecia.

How is the procedure done?

A small amount of your blood is drawn, placed in a sterile tube, and spun in a centrifuge to separate the PRP. This process concentrates the platelet count. While the PRP is being prepared, a topical anesthetic cream is applied on the treatment area. The PRP is then extracted from the tube and can be used for treatment either through direct syringe injections, micro-needling, or both. Micro-needling creates micro “injuries” to the skin, further triggering our own natural healing mechanism and significantly improving your results over direct injections alone.

What areas of the body can be treated treat with PRP?

PRP can be used for rejuvenating skin anywhere on your face, neck, décolleté, and body. In addition, the scalp can be treated for all causes of hair loss and thinning eyebrows can be improved with PRP.

How many PRP Therapy treatments will I need?

A series of 4 to 6 treatments, at 4 weeks intervals, is recommended for best results.

Is PRP Therapy Safe?

Yes. There is no risk of an allergic reaction or rejection since the PRP is derived is from your own blood.

How long is the treatment?

The entire procedure takes 45-60 minutes. You will need to come in 30 minutes prior to your appointment to sit with a topical anesthetic cream (included in the cost of the procedure).

Does PRP Therapy hurt and what will I look like after the treatment?

Patients will feel the pressure of injections and/or micro-needling during the procedure. We apply a topical anesthetic cream prior to your session to minimize any discomfort. Your skin will look red immediately following your treatment although the PRP lessens this. Any redness will diminish in 15 minutes but may last up to 24 hours. Patients may also experience flaking of the skin 2-3 days post micro-needling.

How long does it take to see results?

The number of treatments required will depend on how the patient responds to the procedure and the severity of the problem being treated. Your result is also dependent on whether micro-needling was used. Deeper, ice pick, acne scars may not respond as quickly as more superficial scars, although this is the best treatment available for these scars.

How should you prepare for your PRP treatment?

In preparation for your treatment, it is advised to discontinue topical anti-aging therapies, retinoids (Retin-A), and/or any form of skin treatment 7 days prior to the treatment day. No oral blood thinning medications should be taken at least a week before treatment, unless prescribed by your physician. Avoid all pain relievers (Aspirin, ibuprofen, and even low dose baby Aspirin) except Tylenol (acetaminophen). Stop Vitamin E, all multi-vitamins containing Vitamin E, cinnamon, horseradish, and herbal remedies such as fish oil, ginger root, gingko, etc. a week prior to treatment to prevent prolonged bruising.

Is there any special care that needs to be taken after a PRP treatment?

We recommend that you do not apply make up after your procedure or for the rest of that day. The use of mineral makeup is recommended post treatment, as is chemical free sunblock (containing zinc oxide or titanium dioxide). It is advised not to use any topical anti-aging or acne products for one week after your procedure. Many of these products contain acids which may sting your skin at this time. It is important to avoid sun exposure and sweat-inducing activities for 48 hours after your procedure.
