Micro-Needling

What does Micro-Needling treat?

Micro-needling is a procedure done for improvement of skin texture, scarring, melasma/pigmentation, large pore size, fine lines and wrinkles, and more. The procedure is performed in a safe and precise manner with sterile, single-use disposable needle tips. It rejuvenates the skin and is the single best treatment for ice pick acne scars and stretch marks.

What does the Micro-Needling procedure consist of?

During this procedure, a Micro Pen is used to create micro “injuries” to the skin, stimulating our own natural healing mechanism. The process results in formation of various new tissues including collagen and elastin, as well as capillaries for improved blood supply.  A topical booster [hyaluronic acid or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)] is used during the treatment. The procedure results in smoother, firmer, and younger-looking skin. (See related page on Micro-Needling with PRP for Skin Rejuvenation).

What areas of the body can be treated with Micro-Needling?

Micro-needling can be used for rejuvenating the skin on your face, neck, décolleté, arms, and body. It can treat stretch marks of your abdomen and bumps of the upper arms.  In addition, the scalp can be treated for all causes of hair loss and thinning eyebrows can be improved (both with PRP).

How many Micro-Needling treatments will I need?

A series of 4 to 6 treatments, at 4 weeks intervals, is recommended for best results.

Is Micro-Needling Safe?

Yes. It is performed in a safe manner. There is no tissue destruction with micro-needling. The small punctures created close almost immediately and the healing process starts right away. This treatment is safe for all skin types and colors and can be performed on all areas of the face and body.

How long is a Micro-Needling treatment?

The entire procedure takes 30-60 minutes depending on the required treatment and anatomical site. You will need to come in 30 minutes prior to your appointment to sit with a topical anesthetic cream (included in the cost of the procedure).

Does Micro-Needling hurt and what will I look like after the treatment?

Patients will feel the pressure of injections and micro-needling during the procedure. There may be some pinpoint bleeding throughout the procedure; depending on the needling depth (treatments usually start at 1 mm). We apply a topical anesthetic cream prior to your session to minimize any discomfort. Immediately following the procedure, the skin will be red and flushed in appearance, similar to moderate sunburn; which will diminish after a few hours and may last up to 48 hours. However, those with extra sensitive skin may remain red for longer. You may also experience tightness and sensitivity to touch on the treatment area for the first 24 hours. Your skin may start flaking 2-3 days after the procedure.

How long does it take to see results of a Micro-Needling treatment?

The number of treatments required will depend on how you respond to the procedure and the severity of the problem being treated. The results are also dependent on the treatment depth and the topical booster (hyaluronic acid or PRP) used. Most patients will begin to see results after one treatment. Deep acne scars and wrinkles, however, will need several treatments at gradually increasing depths. Treatments with PRP (your body’s own Platelet Rich Plasma) will show faster results and for some conditions like hair thinning may be necessary.

How should you prepare for your Micro-Needling treatment?

In preparation for your treatment, it is advised to discontinue topical anti-aging therapies, retinoids (Retin-A), and/or any form of skin treatment 7 days prior to the treatment day. No oral blood thinning medications should be taken at least a week before treatment, unless prescribed by your physician. Avoid all pain relievers (Aspirin, ibuprofen, and even low dose baby Aspirin) except Tylenol (acetaminophen). Stop Vitamin E, all multi-vitamins containing Vitamin E, cinnamon, horseradish, and herbal remedies such as fish oil, ginger root, gingko, etc. a week prior to treatment to prevent prolonged bruising.

Is there any special care that needs to be taken after a Micro-Needling treatment?

Micro-Needling has minimal down time. We recommend that you do not apply makeup for the remainder of the day. It is important to avoid sun exposure and sweaty activities such as the gym, sauna, steam room, for at least 48 hours. Patients are urged to apply a high SPF zinc oxide or titanium dioxide based sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily after the treatment. Patients may experience inflammation, itching, and burning of the areas treated. Treat your skin gently and refrain from acid-containing products (Retin-A, Glycolic acid, etc.) for a week.
