Skin cancer is defined by any abnormal growth of skin cells, which means there are a variety of different types of skin cancer. There are melanomas, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma. They are all dangerous diseases that require immediate action. It’s always a good idea to learn what to do after receiving a skin cancer diagnosis.
First Thing’s First
There is always the possibility that you have been misdiagnosed, so it’s important to get a second opinion. After your skin cancer diagnosis, you will be alerted to what stage your cancer is at as well. Once you are sure the diagnosis is correct, there are a number of things to do next.
Is the Cancer Beyond the Skin?
Skin cancer merely begins on the outer layer of the skin; it is still possible for it to spread to other areas. You should undergo extensive testing in order to determine if your skin cancer has penetrated further into the body. This is important because it will determine the best course of action as far as treatment goes after your skin cancer diagnosis. Whether or not your skin cancer has spread to other parts of the body will help determine the next course of action.
Surgery is usually the next step, especially if your cancer has not spread beyond the skin. During the procedure, we will aim to remove the cancer in its entirety. If the surgery is a success, this is all you’ll need to do to rid yourself of skin cancer.
However, if it is determined that the skin cancer has went beyond the skin, you could be in for a more lengthy treatment. You may require one or more lymph nodes to be removed as well. If that cancer has spread beyond the lymph nodes, then treatment will be even more complex. Patients will have to be tested thoroughly, and treatment will be personalized for each individual after the skin cancer diagnosis.
