Our team—Dr. Michael Rogers, Dr. Brooke Rogers, Dr. Alex Kennon, and Barbara Ross, APRN-C—has years of experience treating all types of acne. We’re here to help you understand what’s going on with your skin and create a treatment plan that works for you.

The Different Types of Acne

Acne comes in many forms, and understanding the type you’re dealing with is the first step toward effective treatment. Whiteheads and blackheads are the mildest forms of acne. Whiteheads happen when pores get clogged with oil and dead skin cells, creating small, closed bumps. Blackheads are similar, but the clogged pore stays open, which makes it look dark or black.

Papules and pustules are what most people think of when they hear the word “acne.” Papules are small, red, and inflamed bumps that can feel tender to the touch. Pustules are similar but have a white or yellow center. Nodules and cysts are the more severe types of acne. Nodules are hard, painful lumps that form deep under the skin. Cysts are larger, pus-filled bumps that can be even more painful and often lead to scarring if not treated properly.

How to Treat Acne

The right treatment depends on the type of acne you have, and it’s not always a one-size-fits-all solution. For mild acne, like whiteheads and blackheads, over-the-counter products with ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can often do the trick. Regular exfoliation can also help keep your pores clear and prevent new breakouts.

For more inflamed acne, like papules and pustules, prescription-strength treatments are usually more effective. These might include topical creams or gels, such as retinoids or antibiotics, to reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. Severe acne, like nodules and cysts, requires a more aggressive approach. Oral medications, such as antibiotics or isotretinoin (commonly known as Accutane), are often necessary to get these under control. In-office treatments, like cortisone injections or chemical peels, can also provide relief and speed up healing.
