Skin cancer is more common than you might think, and basal cell carcinoma is the most frequently diagnosed type. While it’s usually not life-threatening, it can cause significant damage if left untreated. At Lakeside Dermatology, with offices in Sebring and Winter Haven, FL, our team specializes in diagnosing and treating basal cell carcinoma. Dr. Michael Rogers, Dr. Brooke Rogers, Dr. Alex Kennon, and Barbara Ross, APRN-C, are dedicated to providing expert care to help you protect your skin and your health.
What Is Basal Cell Carcinoma?
Basal cell carcinoma, or BCC, is a type of skin cancer that starts in the basal cells. These cells are found in the outermost layer of your skin and are responsible for producing new skin cells. When these cells grow uncontrollably, they can form a cancerous lesion. BCC is most often caused by long-term exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. While it’s less likely to spread to other parts of the body compared to other skin cancers, it can grow deeper into the skin and damage surrounding tissue if not treated.
Signs and Symptoms to Watch For
Basal cell carcinoma can look different from person to person, but there are some common signs to keep an eye on. One of the most typical signs is a pearly or waxy bump. These bumps are often flesh-colored or slightly pink and may have visible blood vessels. They can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on areas exposed to the sun, like the face, neck, and arms.
Another sign is a flat, scaly patch of skin that’s slightly raised at the edges. These patches may look like a scar and can be pink, red, or brown. You might also notice a sore that doesn’t heal. If you have a spot that bleeds, crusts over, and then reopens, it’s worth getting checked out. In some cases, BCC can appear as a small, shiny growth with a central indentation. This type of lesion may also develop tiny blood vessels around its edges, giving it a “rolled border” appearance.
